Thank you Bert for the extra information and facts. I wasnt aware that both the barrel and receiver were struck Using the “WP” in the inception of utilizing the “WP” evidence, nor that the “Oval P” didnt seem right until 1908.

Even though there are some plausible theories offered listed here and elsewhere we could in no way know the answer to the first concern in regards to the receiver with equally marks proven in a former article. Based upon other substitute barrels Quick shipping guns I've witnessed which contain both the WP and mail buy P and a statement from the former Winchester personnel that indicated they DID use some mail order parts when rebarreling rifles returned for company I suspect that it's a substitute receiver which was put in and proofed at Winchester as well as the mail get proof was also included to simply point out it was not the initial receiver. That is just my impression/guess. Hope that helps.
